Swim

SWIM was a band from El Paso, Texas, active throughout the mid-to-late 1990s. Built around the rhythm section of drummer Mark Deleon and bassist Fabian Varela, with guitarist Paul Ward and vocalist Norman Pangle at the fore, SWIM forged a sound that resisted easy categorization — blending tuned-down metallic instrumentation with breakbeats, cut-time breakdowns, gang vocals, and unconventional time signatures, frequently within the span of a single song under three minutes. Drawing influence from a deliberately eclectic pool (Jane's Addiction, Pantera, Tool, Fishbone, Sade, Bad Brains, old and new school rap, and tribal percussion), the band channeled these references into a style that moved fluidly between full-frontal aggression and moodier, textured dynamics, at times recalling the early energy of Biohazard while threading in elements far outside the hard rock genre's typical boundaries.

Sound and context

Over the course of three releases between 1996 and 1998, SWIM grew their following entirely through independent means, doubling their sales with each project and earning placement on bills alongside prominent acts of the era including the Deftones, Fu Manchu, Voodoo Glow Skulls, L7, and Drain. Their 1998 full-length debut, produced by Ghery Fimbres and released through Shade Records/Red Division, marked the most complete expression of their sound and reached audiences beyond the El Paso scene.
